How to Have a Healthier Mindset with Social Media for Your Business

It’s more important than ever to reflect on your mindset as you use social media in the new year. 2020 was a major year of growth for social media usage. Lots of scrolling, reading, watching, listening, learning, creating, filming, serving, educating, and connecting as we’ve all spent the entire year at home.

Social media marketing and building a brand online can be overwhelming. It’s easy to get lost in the scroll and over-consume content that leaves you questioning your own.

Mindset and Instagram

Instagram is the main social media platform I use for my business and recommend to others. It’s such a robust platform, which is one of the reasons it is an extremely helpful marketing tool. However, trying to keep up with all the features when you’re using it for business can be draining.

If you’re a business on IG, you have probably felt like this before:

  • Exhausted from trying to keep up with your online presence in the middle of a pandemic when online presence is a necessity.

  • Overwhelmed with the hustle mentality to show up every single day in multiple ways

  • Vanity metrics stress you out: # of followers, likes, views, comments, saves, and shares.

Here are 3 things we should all leave behind for a healthier mindset in 2021:

  1. Leave behind the constant comparison game.

    • Don’t compare your results to someone else’s. We all start at zero. She’s in a different place than you are.

    • We see mostly highlight reels. People aren’t as likely to share as many downs as they are ups. Keep that in mind when you’re scrolling and watching picture perfect content. No one’s life is perfect. Start sharing imperfect moments if you really want to relate to more people.

    • It’s not healthy to compare your low moment to someone’s high moment.

    • If you’re already feeling down, then it’s not the best time to scroll through IG. But even a good day can leave you feeling overwhelmed with Instagram. Your feelings are powerful and so is social media. If you notice yourself picking up on a bad habit with Instagram, acknowledge the pattern so you can work on it.

    • Unfollow accounts that don’t make you feel good and no longer serve you.

    • Focus on building relationships with like-minded people, your ideal client, and other people that compliment your business. Use Instagram as a networking tool and brand builder.

  2. Leave behind your lack of tech boundaries.

    • Have a clear purpose when you open Instagram. Are you checking new posts? Engaging with your community? Filming a live or a story?

    • Give yourself a time limit when you use Instagam. Block it into your calendar if that makes it easier. Every app works to keep you on it for a long period of time. Don’t waste hours scrolling endlessly. Schedule in 10-15-30 minute blocks.

    • Control the compulsive behavior to pick up your phone all the time. Leave it in the other room when you are working on a project that needs your attention. Tell yourself you won’t look at your phone past 8pm.

  3. leave behind generic content. start being genuine.

    • This is how you become more relatable and start marketing yourself without realizing it.

    • Your audience can tell if you sound scripted and too perfect.

    • Be authentic and don’t overthink it. There is no formula for authenticity because you are your own unique self.

    • Share what you know. Share what you learn. Your content already exists, you just need to document it.
